I have always had a deep connection and appreciation for movement and the way it can truly make a person happy regardless of how they felt prior. As a teenager I played lots of sport, and was involved in Acting and Physical Theatre. I graduated from University in 2002 with a Degree in Teaching: Majoring in Drama. I have been teaching Drama in High Schools for the past seven years and have witnessed the therapeutic affects of movement and its potential to lead to cathartic experiences.
A friend took me to my first Bikram Yoga class opposite Burleigh Beach in 2008. At the time, I was underweight, my nervous system was a mess and I lacked significant strength and balance. It took me months before I could “lock the knee” and consider balancing on one leg. Slowly, with practise and patience, things changed and I began to really understand what the teacher meant when they were telling me to “take it easy and enjoy the journey, don’t rush to the destination”. This concept seemed to flourish over my life at the time, and things naturally started to fall into place.
Due to my love of travel, and new found love of Bikram Yoga, after hearing a story about the 9 week teacher-training program, I looked into flying to the States and practising yoga two times a day. I graduated from Bikram Teacher Training in June 2010 and arrived back in Aus in July to teach my first Bikram yoga class to a room full of smiling, familiar, warm Burleigh yogis. Six months have already flown by, and I am truly “enjoying the process” of this new adventure and keep learning as much as I can from the students and the other amazing teachers at the studio.
Teaching Yoga has significantly deepened my own practise and likewise complimented other areas of my life such as my strong passion for the Arts. It has introduced my mind, body and soul as good friends and they now work together making my life “like a dance, rather than a wrestling match”.
